Big Mikes Moving and Hauling is an owner-run Providence shop, one crew and a flat rate instead of a meter. The guy who answers the phone is the one running the crew at your door on moving day.
- Flat-rate pricing
- No hidden fees
- Licensed & insured
Built at home, run by the owner
Mike Barry started Big Mikes with a single truck, a stack of pads, and one plain rule: give people a fair flat rate and stand behind it, no meter, no rounding up. A Providence guy through and through, he had watched too many neighbors get put on an hourly clock and blindsided by a bill nobody warned them about. So he did the reverse: a straightforward flat rate up front, a crew that shows up and hustles, and the junk hauled off on the way out.
To this day there is no call center and no broker taking a cut, only the same crew carrying a Federal Hill three-decker one morning and clearing out a Pawtucket basement that afternoon, Mike and longtime hands like Glenn right there on the job.
How one box truck grew into the whole metro
None of it came from advertising. We grew because the Providence folks we moved kept ringing us back, and pointing their neighbors our way.
- The first truckMike got going with just one box truck and a single rule: a fair flat rate, honored to the dollar.
- Word got around townPeople came back and sent their neighbors, and plain word of mouth filled the calendar quicker than any ad.
- Hauling got addedFolks kept asking us to take the old couch too, so junk removal and cleanouts became half of what we do.
- Out to the mill townsCalls kept coming from Pawtucket, Woonsocket, and Cumberland, so we widened our range across northern Rhode Island.
- Mike still runs itFrom Federal Hill out to the mill towns, he still runs the crew and answers the phone himself.
One flat rate vs. the hourly meter
Most crews around here bill by the hour and let the meter run your total up. Below is a single move, the Big Mikes way against how it normally goes.
| What matters on move day | Big Mikes | A typical hourly mover |
|---|---|---|
| Your price | One flat rate agreed before move day | Wherever the hourly clock ends up |
| Who shows up | Mike's own background-checked crew | Whoever was free that morning |
| Stairs and three-deckers | The stair carry counted into the number already | Often an upcharge at the curb |
| The old junk | Hauled off the same day, in the rate | Left for you to deal with |
| Heavy or awkward pieces | Pianos and safes wrapped into the flat rate | Surprise fees on move day |
| The final bill | Exactly the flat rate you agreed to | Wherever the meter happens to stop |
What comes with every single job
- A flat rate you get up front, before anything is picked up
- Mike's own crew, never a broker or day-labor
- Furniture blanketed, floors run with cloth, everything else shrink-wrapped
- An arrival window we hold to, and a call if it ever needs to shift
- Licensed and insured as a Rhode Island moving company
- Pianos, safes, and the heavy stuff handled by our crew alone
- Junk and cleanouts hauled off and dumped or donated right
- Downtown COIs filed and the elevator or dock booked up front
“The rate I give you is the rate you pay, no meter and no rounding up. That is how we have run it since the very first truck, and it stays that way.”
Mike Barry, ownerOur trucks. Our guys. Nobody farmed out.
Your job is never sold to a broker or handed to day-labor you have never met. The guys carrying your couch are on Mike Barry’s crew, led by hands like Glenn who have done this for years, and the truck out front is ours, run out of our Mount Pleasant shop here in Providence.
- Big Mike’s own crewTrained, background-checked movers working Providence homes and offices all year round.
- Same guys the whole jobOne crew loads it, drives it, unloads it, and hauls the junk, so nothing falls through a hand-off.
- Careful, every timeFurniture under quilts, door frames wrapped, and runners down before a thing gets picked up.
Three-deckers, mill-town stairs, tight city streets, and the junk hauled off too
A move around Providence has its own headaches: three- and four-story triple-deckers with narrow winding stairs, close-packed streets on the East Side and Federal Hill, old mill-town walk-ups up in Pawtucket and Woonsocket, and a pile of junk left behind. We work around every one of them, and we can haul the leftovers away the same day.
Three-decker ready
Narrow, winding triple-decker stairs on the East Side, Federal Hill, and Olneyville, carried with pads and patience.
Haul-away built in
Old couches, mattresses, and full cleanouts taken off your hands and dumped right, on the same trip if you want.
Every-season crew
Salted steps through a New England winter, early starts in the summer heat, so your date holds either way.
